Stanley, Albert Augustus

American composer and organist; born at Manville, Rhode Island; studied music at Leipsic wth Wenzel, Papperitz, Paul and E. F. Richter from 1871 to 1875. He was organist of Grace Episcopal Church at Providence, and from 1888 until the present time professor of music at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Mr. Stanley has given organ recitals in various parts of the country, at one time was president of the Music Teachers' National Association, and in 1893 was appointed examiner for the American College of Musicians. He has composed The City of Freedom, an ode produced in Boston in 1883; organ fugues; a suite for violin and piano; a psalm of victory for solo, chorus and orchestra; partsongs; songs and much organ-music. His symphony, The Awakening of the Soul; and a symphonic poem, Altis, have been performed at Ann Arbor.
