German violinist and composer; noted more especially as a theorist; born at Brunswick; was a pupil of Moritz Hauptmann. After various engagements as violinist in Leipsic and other German cities he settled in Dresden as teacher of harmony and counterpoint at the Conservatory, 1862. Besides a number of vocal and instrumental compositions, including a symphony and overtures, he has published several theoretical works, Uber Modulation, Quartsextakkord und Orgelpunkt; Erlauterungen und Aufgaben zum Studium des Kontrapunkts; Die Gesetzmassigkeit der Harmonik; and has contributed articles on musical theory to various periodicals.
