1843-
Belgian composer; born at Brussels. He was a pupil at the Conservatory there and won the second prize in 1863 for his cantata, Paul and Virginia, winning the Grand Prize of Rome two years later, for his cantata, La fille de Jephte. The latter prize enabled him to travel through Europe and he became director of the Conservatory of Mons until 1877, when he resigned. He was conductor and teacher at Antwerp and Brussels and in 1886 was made professor of harmony at the Brussels Conservatory. He has composed the oratorios Een laatste zonnestraal, Blormardinne, and Willem van Oranjes dood; the dramatic poem Verlichting, for organ, orchestra, solos and choruses; a symphonic funebre; a romantic suite, many songs, piano-pieces and instrumental numbers.
