Winkel, Dietrich Nikolaus

1780-1826

Originator of the idea of the metronome which came into use during modern times. Winkel lived in Amsterdam and there constructed several interesting instruments. One of these was called componium and was a "variation" machine by which a given theme was presented in an endles variety of ways.
