Reading, John

1677-1764

English organist and composer; son of the preceding; was a chorister of the Chapel Royal under John Blow; in 1700 became organist of Dulwich College; in 1702 left this post and became lay-vicar of Lincoln Cathedral, and the next year also master of choristers. In 1707 he returned to London, where he held the position of organist in several different churches. He died in London. His compositions include A Book of New Songs with Symphonies; Thoroughbass fitted to the Harpsichord; and A Book of New Anthems. The Portuguese Hymn has also been ascribed to him.
