Lomakin, Gabriel Joachimovich
1812-1885
Boy-singer in the well-known choir of Count Scheremetier, and of which, in 1830 he became choirmaster. From 1848 to 1859 he was a teacher of singing in the Court Chapel and in the Theatrical School, and he also conducted singing-classes in many of the educational institutions in St. Petersburg. In 1862 he was one of the founders, with Balakirev, of the Free School of Music and he conducted its singing-classes until 1870. Four years later he retired on account of illhealth, and he died in Gatchina. He arranged many of the old church-tunes and national airs.
