Kauffmann, Ernst Friederich
1803-1856
German composer of songs; was born at Ludwigsburg, and died at Stuttgart. He successfully taught himself the piano, attended the University of Tubingen, and became director of the Realschule at Ludwigsburg. He was forced to give up this position on account of his revolutionary tendencies, and was imprisoned for four years. It was during this time that he composed his thirty-six songs, all of which are beautiful and artistic.
