Burgmuller, Norbert
1810-1836
A gifted German pianist and composer, whose brilliant promise was cut short by death. He was born at Dusseldorf, and came of a musical family. His father, who at the time of his birth was music-director at Dusseldorf, was his first instructor. He studied at Cassel under Spohr and Hauptmann, showed remarkable originality and ability in his work, but died at Aix-la-Chapelle at the age of twenty-six. Among his published compositions are an overture and two symphonies. An elder brother, Johann Friedrich Franz, 1806 to 1874, was the author of numerous pieces for the piano.
