Wilbye, John

Composer of the Sixteenth and early Seventeenth Century. Little is known concerning his life except that he lived in London and was a teacher in Austin Friars. He was famous as a writer of madrigals. His first set contains thirty compositions; the second is for three, four, five and six voices and violin accompaniment, containing in all thirty-four. He contributed two madrigals to Leighton's Tears and Lamentations. The Musical Antiquarian Society has reprinted these works of Wilbye's. The originals bear the dates 1598 ana 1609.
